(Alert! This post is to be read with a decidedly British accent…)
I dare say I’m so brassed off by the many blokes in my company who are so busy with their mundane corporate schedules that they cannot find one bloody minute to spare on their new business venture!
Last week I discussed finding the time to build a network marketing business.
But today I declare an easy-peasy analogy to encourage you to open your day planner and discover the time to work your business.
One of the first books I read that taught network marketing fundamentals was “Dare to Dream, Work to Win” by Dr. Tom Barrett.
And dare I say, it is BRILLIANT!!!
To this day I recommend it to all new partners in my organization, and am even leading a study group that is reviewing each chapter of the book. It’s the ump-teenth time I’ve read it, and I still adore each lesson!
One of the first principles is to “Grow your business in the nooks and crannies of your daily life.“
Surely this brings back memories of Thomas’ English Muffin commercials, and their delicious nooks and crannies.
(Mental note: Do write a post on how Thomas’ marketing executives touted not the product, but the space between the product, as the true feature. It was just air, yes dear?)
Back to my point: no one has spare time to build their business.
We all have responsibilities that demand our time, such as families and jobs and our kids’ extra-curricular activities and pets and church obligations and sports teams and etc. etc. etc.
But using these as excuses as to why one cannot build their MLM is “stating a priority, not a fact” as said by Sir Tom Barrett.
And thus, we must utilize the small breaks within our certainly busy days to fit in a phone call…
To respond to our emails…
To have a convo on Skype…
And simply, to build our network marketing business.
When you normally would eat lunch with co-workers, drive to and from work, sleep in, or watch TV, you can allocate this time to working your business.
While 15 minutes here and there may not seem like much, it adds up to a couple hours a week, and dozens of hours each month.
And in our wonderful world of network marketing where we can build a fortune part-time, this translates to sales, new members of your downline, a part-time and eventually a career-level income.
And if someone decides to not work their business like the said breakfast pastry… well, they will surely be in sixes and sevens…
So this is what I think and Bob’s your uncle!
Do be so kind as to comment below how YOU fit your business into what is surely a busy, jam-packed calendar.
How do you find the time to build your biz?

What a great insight that Thomas’ promoted the space between the muffin and not the actual product. I never thought of it that way. It makes me want an English Muffin straight away. This is a really good topic. Not finding time to work your business usually means you want others to confirm that you don’t have the time. A very strange twist of human nature. Thanks so much for sharing this in the English accent and all.

Melissa, great advice that applies to any entrepreneur in any business. If you stay focused and don’t fritter away time on non productive activities we are then able to make time for building a new business. I have always loved politics and used to read political websites all the time. I abandoned that activity about a year ago and replaced that reading time with books, e-books, blogs that related to online and social marketing – knowledge that will help me grow my company. Thanks for the post!

Hey Melissa,
I’m reading Harry Potter series w/my daughter and enjoyed your English use of “bloke” and “bloody” in this post
.
I too love Tom Barrett’s book and it’s high on my list of recommended books.
As for working on your business, there’s never enough time in the day but what it’s really about is just another excuse not to work on your business (ouch). If you have a Smartphone, you can easily tweet, add a few comments on LinkedIn, syndicate w/our fab TSA pals, emails, and so forth. You can get a lot done in 1 focused hour, if you choose discipline over distraction.

Hi Melissa,
Being English I think I had the accent down
although I have to tell you, I’m not sure we do muffins! The only time I see or hear reference to and English Muffin is when I’m in the US, or on (US imported) TV. So your article made me smile for lots of reasons..!
You made a really good point though. I’m devoting more and more time to home based business but until recently I’d been trying hard to fit it in around the edges. Not ideal, but you can still make a difference doing it that way for sure.
Thanks again and I look forward to your next post.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Melissa,
Great post, full of good advice. Had to laugh at the ‘English aspect’ ‘me bein from England an all that!! lol! altho you may have guessed my accent is not quite as ‘proper’ as that. Also the picture is of crumpets, think the name differs depending where in England you are from, but ‘I’ll tell ya wot! I had some for me breakfast this morning and they were bloody gorgeous’ haha!
So tomorrow morning, before I tuck into ‘my hot buttered crumpets’ I will look at all the nooks and crannies and think of your advice… and then scoff the lot Mmmm lol!
Cheerie bye …pip pip!!

Melissa,
This book was also one of the first network marketing books I read and I agree, it’s brilliant! Tom Barrett is awesome…I actually had the great privilege of hearing him speak many years ago and it was awesome!
The “nooks and crannies” analogy is great, and I too use it in my business. Since we are in the relationship business, it’s really all about building relationships with people, whether we’re home on the computer or out shopping. Smile at people, talk to them, and make a new friend – every chance you get. People just aren’t used to be treated well by strangers, and will open up very quickly when you show an interest in them.

Hi Melissa,
The space and nooks and crannies add up to a lot of free time. I found loads of free time when I got rid of my TV. And I have a commitment to do at least one thing on my business every day. When I have the time, I focus and spend as much time as I have. It all comes from the passion we have to make a new life for ourselves. Thank you for an insightful look at time management.

Melissa,
Such a great way to look at your business. Filling the time in-between our regular schedule works great! It all boils down to how dedicated you are to succeed in what ever it is you say you want.
Keeping your mind open to opportunities everywhere does make a difference.
Filling in all the nooks and crannies!
P.S. I love English Muffins with butter and homemade Blackcap jam. Yummmmmm

Hi Melissa,
My favorite part of your post was “Grow your business in the nooks and crannies of your daily life.” That’s so very true. Life is always in session and we can always find excuses to not work. But that’s all they are — excuses. Thanks for the swift kick you know where!

Great title, I too find that this advice works for building any business while you are still holding a slave camp job! I too find that people get caught in the 9 to 5 TRAP and don’t even know they are there.
Don’t waste your time on them! Build your business in all those nooks and crannies around them and you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank!

Melissa,
Love your analogy of the English Muffin and the nooks and crannies of our lives. Today I just had to get my hair cut and styled – it was time. So – As soon as I got home I took out my trusty tripod, replaced my camera battery with one that had been charging, and
voila – I created two new videos.
It is so true that we can take those minutes and get a lot of things done, even if we don’t have large blocks of free time.

Melissa,
You are TOO funny! Love the accent and the “nooks and crannies” and it is SO true!!! We all have the same amount of time and if we don’t use it to create what we say what we want, then we deserve what we have.
Thanks so much,

Aloha Melissa,
Great post and I love Tom Barrett’s book too! Gosh, I haven’t read that one for quite a while.
Thanks for making sure we read it with an accent, such a nice touch! You’re brilliant! And yes, you are so right about the nooks and crannies. When I started my network marketing business I did it from 3am-6am, then I went to my corporate job and wasn’t back home til 9pm or later! It worked! Anything that you make a priority in your life, you will find the time for.
Thank you for an awesome post!

Kellie
