As you may have heard, I am open and unabashed about my love for Timothy Ferriss.
And right up there with Tim is another man whom I totally admire, Anthony Robbins. In case you live under a rock, Tony is a peak performance coach who began his career working for the business philosopher Jim Rohn as a teen. He later promoted his own self-help products and seminars through his infamous infomercials, and has personally coached many professional athletes, top investors, and politicians. I believe Tony to be the most prolific speaker in the space of personal development.
(And if you’re wondering why a happily married woman touts her adoration for these Adonis-like creatures, you clearly haven’t heard my husband diatribe about the exquisiteness and air of his beloved Mila Kunis…)
But back on point:
Tony Robbins’ new show “Breakthroughs With (you guessed it!) Tony Robbins” premiered on Tuesday night, and naturally I watched it as any fanatic would.
Tony brought a husband and wife who had been struck with tragedy on their wedding day to his island and resort in Fiji to teach them how to repair their relationship.
(If you want to learn more about the show, you can read a synopsis of it here and watch the full episode here.)
It was dramatic, it was dripping with heightened emotion, it was transformational, and I’m sure I’ll tune in again.
But what gets me the most inspired about Tony is how QUICKLY he can change someone’s belief, mindset, and attitude. He doesn’t believe you need to spend months – or years - on a couch to heal. His gift is to take broken people and teach them to find their power. And at the end of the day (or network hour) every one goes home happy.
I had the pleasure of seeing Tony train at his last “Unleash The Power Within” event in Atlanta a few years ago. (Many know this event as the “fire-walk” because each participant, including moi, are prepped to walk on fire the first evening of the weekend to understand how to tap into his or her potential.) Tony is larger than life, and I doubt he would’ve had the same career if God made him a foot shorter. Really, the man is enormous! And his passion and excitement are even more in-your-face and pronounced in person than from what I saw on TV this week.
What I learned most from Tony was about how capable we truly are as human beings. When I explained the fire-walk experience to my friends afterward, I was met with disbelief. The only way I found that I could describe it was to liken it to the super-human strength a mom may exhibit to lift a car off of her trapped child. It’s a news story we’ve all heard and thought, “Yeah, that makes sense.”
But to tap into this power everyday as I sit down at my computer to make something beautiful is a delta I’m still learning to bridge!
What do you think about Tony Robbins? Did you watch “Breakthrough” on Tuesday night? What did you think?

Hi Melissa,
Terrific post with a bit of personal humor thrown in. I adore Tim Ferriss but probably not quite at the same degree as you, lol. I love Tim’s book and following his adventures all over the world through his blog. Tony Robbins is equally amazing. I haven’t watched it but inspired to check it out.

Hi Melissa,
I watched it. I have loved Tony Robbins for many years. He was one of my favorites to listen to audios to keep motivated. I thought the show was good. I really felt for the couple who had such a devastating accident at their wedding. Amazing how Tony helped them change the thinking.

Hi Melodie,
I’m writing this as I am crewing the Unleash the Power Within event in Long Beach. It was a joy to see peoples faces light up after they breakthrough by walking over fire. As you know that was only Day 1.
So happy to see Tony being on Primetime TV. This will bring Personal Development and Coaching to the forefront.
I’ve been blessed to be trained in all the technologies of a Robbins Master Coach.
My last post was on Tony’s show as well. =)
Namaste,

Hi Melissa,
I know about Tony Robbins, but I haven’t really watched him. Based on your description, I will take a look at the show.
A few weeks ago, I did have the pleasure of hearing his son Jairek speak at the “No Excuses” Event. I later interviewed him and got to chat for a little while. He was very warm, intelligent and personable, not to mention really, really smart!
Thanks for sharing this info. We all need someone to look up to!

Hi Melissa,
I absolutely loved the show, it’s the inspiration we all needed. However, I heard that it just got pulled from NBC’s line up.
I’m so bummed. But that certainly does NOT take away the power this wonderful man has.
Thanks for this great post.

Hi Melissa –
I was so sorry I missed the first episode – we don’t get NBC :-p
BUT I did find all 6 episodes on Hulu yesterday and proceeded to watch them all! Grin. I guess I love him too.
There’s a not there that says they’re available on that site till 9/4.
It’s especially intriguing to see him in action with his coaching style – right there with you with a thumbs up re. making large shifts in short times … heck with the couch.
I enjoyed your post – your voice is strong in your writing
Nice to meet you!
