Mom, I Joined A Cult

I had heard of Landmark Forum for the past nine years when some friends from college went to their introductory course, the Landmark Forum.

And I knew it was just another cult-ish group of personal development junkies that were high on life and had finally found something they could get behind and make them feel good about their lives.

Forum promises breakthroughs and tools to overcome challenges in different areas of your life blah blah blah… I feel silly just typing that!

Since I began my network marketing business seven years ago, I have met many Landmark Forum graduates in my business.

It was surprising to me that they had been to Forum because they were people that I really liked and respected!   And I just didn’t see why they would spend their time and money on a life-changing weekend when they could just read “How to Win Friends And Influence People” and call it a day!

Then, one of my team members attended Forum last year.  His participation ended any conversations we ever had about his obstacles and challenges in pursuing his goals and dreams.

The next month my mentor, whom I A-D-O-R-E, attended Forum!  I couldn’t believe it: she’s a wildly successful part-time networker with a serious six-figure income… what was she doing associating with those crazies?

I noticed a difference in her language, her integrity with both keeping appointments and her word, and was totally intrigued…

It was time to realize that I had a lot of preconceived notions about what the Forum was (or wasn’t) and take a closer look.

So last night I graduated from Landmark Forum.

The most exciting thing I took away was how we fail as humans to differentiate the reality of what happens to us with the meaning and stories we create about what happens to us.

How does this apply to learning network marketing fundamentals?

Let’s say a client doesn’t call you back after you make a sale and conduct your follow-up.

You could be thinking: Why doesn’t he want to work with me?  What’s wrong with me?  Did he go to a competitor?

But in reality there are a zillion reasons he may be out of touch with you: He thinks everything is going great!  He may prefer email.  He may think you take up too much time on the phone with him.  Etc… etc… etc…

This simplistic example shows how we can talk ourselves right out of success with our inner speech, disempowering thoughts, and unrelated experiences we bring to the table.

You networkers will enjoy this video from Landmark Education’s Youtube channel on how their principles apply to business… it’s short and sweet (just like me!):

    Aloha Melissa,

Congratulations! I have heard many positive things about the forum! Personal Growth is always so valuable and when we have the opportunity to “experience” like in a “forum”, it becomes very valuable.

I have been in tons of experiences where I have been 100% Wrong because I realized after many years that each person perceives the world differently from everyone else (Quantum physics). Once I knew this was fact, it changed everything for me. In a way, everyone is always right and everyone is always wrong at the same time, depending on which “glasses” you are wearing at the time! LOL! But true. Makes life so much “in flow” and with ease.

Thank you for sharing and for your insights!

    Aloha,

Congratulations Melissa! Great post! Our perception of why it goes the way it does! Working on that one continually! I can relate to talking myself right out of success with my inner speech, disempowering thoughts, and unrelated experiences!

WOW … this sounds incredible. Is the forum just in the U.S.? I’ve never heard of it before.
I can totally relate to this short video. I can think of several situations where I’ve talked myself into believing the opposite of what might be true. As marketers we tend to do it in thinking that someone won’t be interested in what we have to offer. That’s why our companies keep telling us not to prejudge our prospects.
I can see how Landmark Forum can really help people to become higher achievers. GREAT post Melissa!!

Hi Melissa, what a fun post about you wondering about the “forum” for so long, and then experiencing it for yourself!

I too, have been in lots of situations where I’ve perceived things differently and then seen things in a different light.

One example is where I “thought” I couldn’t meditate, and when I found some meditations by Abraham Hicks that “resonate” with me, I now feel differently towards meditation. And, I love it and get a lot out of it.

Look forward to reading more of your posts Melissa! Regards from Julieanne

Give power away,is very powerful information. Making others important is a principle that really works. However we live in a culture where is seems we need to tell everyone how important we are. Melissa thanks for sharing the video and the important words.
